Be Cautious with Electricity to Remain Safe and Sound

In India scores of people are getting maimed or killed every year due to electricity related workplace accidents despite having several mandatory regulations and safety standard practices.

One of the major reasons for fatalities is lack of awareness on safety procedures by employees. Due to non-compliance to safety laws and regulations, workers are exposed to shocks, fires and burns caused by faulty electrical wiring, unsafe installations, substandard safety system and defective equipment.

So, How to reduce the risks and hazards caused by electricity at workplaces! Following points are worth remembered for both employers and workers to prevent electricity related accidents.

  • Overloading of power points should be avoided.
  • Proper grounding and insulation of equipment which are running on electricity.
  • Overcrowding of power sockets should be avoided. Use only standard cables and switches to prevent power leakages and shocks.
  • Avoid touching any equipment with wet hands.
  • Always use preventive gears like gloves and jackets while inspecting any electrical equipment.
  • Adequate ventilation should be ensured for power generator and central power distribution rooms.
  • Only qualified and trained staff should be allowed to enter power room or attempt to rectify power problems.
  • Places which are susceptible to power hazards and dangers should be clearly marked to create awareness and caution employees.
  • Regular auditing/reviewing should be carried out to check the functioning of all safety procedures and practices, quality of safety equipment and system, need to enhance safety measures, and risk management system.
  • Regular checking of all power points, fuses, equipment, and installations by a competent electrician, engineer, or HSE professional .
  • Remove all plugs and electrical cords of gadgets which are not in use to save power and also to prevent fire or shocks.
  • Periodic training should be given to workers on electrical safety and procedures to remain safe and healthy.
  • Every employee should know the effect of accidents due to mishandling of electricity and faulty power connection. Hence any discrepancy regarding wiring and quality of equipment should be immediately reported to seniors for necessary actions.
  • No inflammable liquids/gases should be kept in power generator room or any other places where heat generated due to heavy power usage.
  • Always keep the wiring concealed and never expose for possible physical damage. No power cables should be kept open or overhead.
  • Always ensure that even a small electricity problem is attended by a qualified and trained electrician.
  • For every tripping of power, a regular check should be initiated to find the possible flaws to prevent major shutdowns and accidents.

By following the standard procedures and safety regulations, employers can avoid electricity related accidents. As most of the electrical hazards can be prevented or controlled with little caution and regular checks, industries should ensure that workers get regular training on electrical safety and provide protective equipment to safeguard them in case of exigency.
