International English Language Testing System [IELTS] is an English proficiency test that evaluates your language skills in four main areas of it, that is listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is the most popular English language test and is accepted by all English speaking countries in the world as an entry requirement for study, migration or work. IELTS scores are required to gain admission into higher education across various Universities/Colleges in countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many more. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English.
What is the mode of IELTS test?
There are paper based IELTS exam and Computer based IELTS exam. Both these exams are conducted at various IELTS centers in the world. You can also book an online IELTS exam to be given at home or any other convenient location where the internet connections are very stable.
What is the Test format?
The IELTS test has four modules which are Listening [30 minutes], Reading [60 minutes], Writing [60 minutes] and Speaking [15 minutes]. The entire test takes 2 hours 45 minutes. Listening, Reading and Writing will be conducted on the same day without any breaks and the Speaking module may be scheduled on the same day or on any other day within a week prior to or after the test date.
Which IELTS Test is suitable for me?
IELTS Tests are of two types: IELTS GENERAL TRAINING AND IELTS ACADEMIC.
The IELTS General Training test is given by those who wish to study below degree level in an English speaking country. This includes an English-speaking school or college. Those aiming for work experience or other employment training also should give this test.
IELTS General Training is also required for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.
The IELTS Academic test is suitable for those who wish to study in an English-speaking environment or university (higher education). You can also take IELTS Academic for professional registration purposes.
When and where can I take IELTS test?
You can search for the nearest IELTS test center and book a date for pen and paper IELTS test. There will mostly be a test in a week. Computer based and Online IELTS tests are more frequent.
Is there a break between the different modules of the test?
On the test date, Listening, Reading and Writing tests will take place continuously without a break in between. The speaking module may be scheduled on the same day or on another day close to the test date.
What is the scoring method of IELTS?
A 9-band scoring system is available for IELTS. You receive an individual band score for each module and an overall band score from a band scale of 0 to 9. Scores are reported in whole bands and half bands out of band 9.
How to register for the test?

When and how can I get my IELTS Test results?
Your results for pen and paper-based exam will be out on the 13th working day after your test date. This will be sent to you or your training center. The results can also be viewed online.
If you have attempted the computer-based test, your results will be available online within 3 to 5 days after your tests.

How is IELTS online exam different from IELTS paper based exam?
IELTS online test has the same format, test content, timing and marking criteria as IELTS in a test centre. You just give the test online.
Which center should I choose to give IELTS exam?
Whichever center you opt for, the test on a date remains the same at all centers. It is just a myth that test at some centres are easier than those at others.
How many types of IELTS tests are there?

What if I am not happy with my result?
You can follow the Enquiry on Results procedure if you are unhappy with your results. Here an application for re-mark is filed within six weeks of the test date. An enquiry fee must be paid for this process which will be fully refunded if your band score changes. However, we need to bear in mind the fact that IELTS Examiners and markers follow strict assessment guidelines and are regularly monitored. The IELTS testing process has the highest quality control procedures.
Can I use a pen for the IELTS Listening and Reading tests?
No. IELTS tests must be written in pencil as the answer sheet is scanned by a computer which cannot read pen.
