CONFINED SPACES

In many cases this has resulted in tragedy with the death of the poorly equipped rescuers. The only rescue that works is by harness and tripod, so these must be on site and in place. You have 3 minutes to get a man out.
Confined spaces such as manholes can turn into dangerous life threatening places very quickly. It is essential that proper working methods are set up at the outset as one person getting into difficulty soon multiplies as untrained and unequipped rescuers go in to help.

What is a Confined Space

Any space such as a closed tank with restricted access, manholes, trenches, pipes, flues, ducts, even enclosed rooms or basements where there is inadequate natural ventilation.
Entry must be strictly controlled through a PERMIT TO WORK SYSTEM.
Before any work starts in a confined space precautions must be taken such as:-
  1. Assess alternatives to working in a confined space
  2. Draw up a thoroughly thought out plan and method
  3. Men must be trained to work in confined spaces
  4. Rescue equipment to be in close proximity, checked and tested.
  5. Have the space tested for oxygen levels, flammable and / or poisonous gases.
  6. Vent the space and force fresh air in
Provide a thorough briefing to the workforce
  7. No smoking at any time.
  8. Use water based adhesives and avoid using paints and adhesives which give off solvent vapours.

  1. Do not use petrol or diesel engines in or near the space, site them away in a well ventilated area – this also keeps the noise down.
This toolbox talk does not qualify you to work in a confined space but will alert you to the dangers so that you do not take chances. Special training and briefings is essential “DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ENTER ANY CONFINED SPACE UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN PROPERLY TRAINED.”
