Why Is It Important

To ensure that all personnel at workplace are aware of the response required in the event of unanticipated finds of archaeological /historical value and the importance of cooperating with the Archaeological Specialists. In addition the necessity of reporting immediately any unusual finds/features revealed during operations.

  • Be aware of finding anything different to what was expected i.e. pottery, coins, bones, tiles etc .
  • Stop work on discovery of any archaeological features and contact your supervisor immediately .
  • Protect area while awaiting determination of appropriate action from Archaeological Specialist .
  • Fully implement any mitigation measures as required e.g. preservation /protection in situ; excavation and record.
  • Report the presence of any human remains encountered should be reported immediately to your supervisor & cordon off. Project Manager will contact police and coroner.
  • Re-start work till notified by Archaeological Specialist and supervisor.
  • Remove any archaeological finds such as coins, pottery, bones. It’s illegal.
  • Ignore archaeology finds. They may be of great historical value.
  • Undertake work adjacent to areas of archaeological importance without considering any damage that may occur, i.e. vibration.

Questions:

1.Have all staff/operatives been briefed about any areas of archaeological importance within the site?
2.Are staff aware of likely archaeology finds on site (if any)?
3.What to do in the event of archaeology find?
4.What is the method of communication?
