Tool box Talks – Safety Signs

Safety Signs are defined as those combining shape, color and pictorial symbols to convey specific heath and safety information or instructions, according to accepted standards. The standards are international so that safety signs are instantly recognizable throughout the world.

They are divided into 5 categories which are :
1. Prohibition – The signs are round or circular with dominant colour being
red. They have black symbol; or pictogram on a white background with a
red border and diagonal cross bar.

2. Fire fighting Equipment – These signs identify particular types of equipment and locations. Example: fire extinguisher labels and fire hose reel instructions. Signs are rectangular or square, red being the dominant color, they have white symbol or pictogram on a red background.

3. Warning – These indicate a need to be careful and take precautions in
respect of a particular hazard. Example High voltage electricity, slippery
surface, forklifts or cranes working in the area. The sign are triangular with
dominant color yellow. They have black symbol or pictogram on a yellow
background with a black border.

4. Mandatory Action- these direct the taking of specific action or behaviour, usually in respect of the need to wear personal protective equipment. Example: helmets, eye protection, safety belts, ear protection etc. they are circular with a solid blue background with white pictogram.

5. Safe Condition – These identify safe behaviour or places of safety.
Examples drinking water, emergency exits, emergency eyewash, first aid
box, etc. The signs are rectangular or square with green as dominant color.
They have a white symbol or pictogram on a green background.
