What is PPE?

PPE (personal protective equipment) means all equipment that is worn to protect the wearer against risk to health and safety.

When is PPE required?

PPE is required as a last resort when there is still health and safety risks after all other measures have been taken.

Your Task sheet will identify when it is required.

Do I have to wear it?

Yes, when PPE is provided to protect against a hazard then you have a legal duty to wear it, failure to do so could result in disciplinary action.

Do I have to pay for it?

No, your employer has a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to provide safety equipment, including PPE, free of charge to their employees.

What about work boots?

We cannot supply every type of work boot, which men prefer, there are just so many different combinations. See your supervisor and order from the preferred PPE list.

Do I have to wear it all the time at work?

You must wear it whenever you are exposed to the hazard and when working in PPE designated areas.

What should I do it the PPE does not fit?

Take the matter up with your employer: in order to protect the wearer the PPE must be a good fit.

Are there any special storage requirements?

PPE should be kept in a clean and tidy condition and fit for the designated use.

Can I take it home?

If you wish to take PPE home you should seek your employer’s agreement. But be warned: PPE could be contaminated with harmful materials and by taking it home you may be putting yourself and others at risk.
