HAND INJURY PREVENTION

INTRODUCTION

It has been trended that most number of work related injuries involve the hands. Without your fingers or hands, your ability to work and play would be greatly reduced.Human hands are unique. No other creature in the world has hands that can grasp, hold, move,and manipulate objects like human hands. They are one of your greatest assets. And, as such,must be protected and cared for.

Common hand hazards:
Hand Tools, using inappropriate tools for the job, using broken or defective tools, using the right tool the wrong purpose.
Types of hand injuries:
Burns, Lacerations/ Amputations, Crushes, Abrasions, Puncture / Absorption, Dermatitis,Bruising/Impact, Cuts (incision) Rheumatic disorders.

Causes of hand injury

Inattention or lack of focus, Inadequate assessment of risk, Cutting corners / rushing, Lifting /applying force incorrectly, Using the incorrect tool for the job, Incorrect use of hand tools (hammers, spanners), Poor positioning of hands when using hand tools, Hands placed over any high pressure equipment (sand blasting equipment, spray painting guns), Absorption through the skin whilst handling chemicals could lead to chronic problems, Working with bare hands around any rough surfaces.Unaware of hazards,Wrong hand/ body position, Putting hands close to rotating blades, Use of wrong type of gloves for the job, Wearing of hand jewellery (ring, watch, bracelet, etc.) at work. Wrong manual handling technique, unmarked hot surfaces leading to personnel touching them,

Pinchhand_injurie Points, Hands can be trapped between moving parts of machinery, Moving objects striking against stationary objects and your hand is caught between both, When you are moving an object and it causes another object to move and fall down on your hands, When an item or article (ring, shirt, jewelries etc.) is caught and hand is pulled in to equipment, Surfaces with extreme temperatures (Hot or Cold), contact with chemicals – corrosives & solvents, burns due to electrical shock.
